Information Alert: GEO Contract Ratified

Marilyn Lablaiks, Assistant Director, Labor and Employee Relations and HR Compliance
Ron Puskarits, Director of Compensation

The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) has ratified a new contract effective from August 16, 2012 through August 15, 2015. The new minimum wages for a GEO member for a 50% FTE, 9-month appointment during the term of the contract are listed below:

Academic Year
Minimum Wage
Continuing Assistant Increase
Fall 2012 to Summer 2013
$15,065
The percentage increase determined by the Provost on the Chicago campus to be the general wage increase for AY12/13*, AY13/14, AY 14/15 but not less than the minimum.
Fall 2013 to Summer 2014
$15,565
Fall 2014 to Summer 2015
$16,065

Or general campus wage increase if higher

*Increase for AY 12/13 payable to those Assistants on the University payroll at the time of ratification and signature by both parties.

The new contract provided eligible GEO members with a pay increase for AY 12/13 that would raise the salary to the minimum or a 2% increase, whichever is greater. Any wage increase that a GEO member received during AY12/13 was applied to their wage after applying the new minimum or 2% increase. GEO members on the University payroll at the time of ratification of the contract are eligible for the pay increases for AY 12/13. The UIC HR Service Center has processed the increases for eligible GEO members, along with their retroactive amounts due, in the May monthly paycheck. There are approximately 60 Graduate Assistants for whom a pay adjustment will be required. The UIC HR Service Center will contact you with the names and amounts in the next couple of weeks.

Please make sure that GEO members’ appointments for Summer 2013 are at least at their new pay rate (please check the HR Front End). If you have already issued offer letters for Summer 2013, you can cross out the old rate, write in the new rate, and resubmit to the GEO member. Remember to include the offer letter with your HR Front End transaction. GEO appointments for the Summer 2013 and Fall 2013 can now be processed in the HR Front End.

The new contract also provides improvements in Health Care. These details will be covered in a presentation to the campus shortly regarding the overall contract. Please feel free to contact Marilyn Lablaiks (lablaiks@uic.edu or at ext. 6-1232) about details related to the contract.

Graduate Hourly Employees
Grad Hourly employees hold a 0% (zero percent) appointment, are Graduate students doing Graduate level work, and paid by the hour. Grad Hourly students are not eligible for a tuition waiver.
The minimum hourly rate for Grad Hourly employees will be equal to the minimum wage for GEO members on a 50% FTE, 9-month appointment. More information on Grad Hourly employees will be coming shortly.
