Graduate Assistant Job Postings

By Marilyn Lablaiks
Hiring a Graduate Assistant provides needed financial support to our graduate students. Graduate Assistantships allow our graduate programs to grow and attract the best students. This enhances the national reputation of the University and our campus, and provides a highly qualified and motivated candidate to perform needed functions for the hiring unit. This can be within the college and department the student is enrolled in, or in departments and units outside the college that administratively support the University and campus.
Graduate Assistants have a variety of skills that are easily transferrable to project needs. These skills include, but are not limited to; communication, foreign language, math, science, writing, computer, network, technical , teaching, research, administrative, general office, outreach, and all other special and ordinary working needs of campus departments and units.
Departments and Units can support campus graduate programs by hiring Graduate, Teaching or Research Assistants for projects, or to fill temporary or part-time positions that require 0.25 – 0.67 FTE over a 91 day period in the Fall or Spring, or a 41 day period in the Summer.  Currently, minimum pay for Graduate Assistants is a stipend of $14,565 for a 0.50 FTE. Graduate Assistants also receive a base tuition waiver to enable them to complete their studies.
Colleges, departments and units can post unfilled open positions for Graduate Assistants on the Human Resources Website in the same way they post other open positions through HireTouch. This process is open and simple and brings together employing departments and qualified applicants that may not otherwise have found each other through mere serendipity.
Employing units and departments should go to the UIC HR home page http://www.uic.edu/depts/hr/ and find HireTouch in the drop down menu on the left under HR Systems.
